The Valley of Temples, Agrigento, Sicily

Agrigento can be reached via bus or train from any town in Sicily. A bus from Catania to Agrigento cost about 12.4€ (http://www.saistrasporti.it). I did not remember how long, but it was quite a long journey (2-3 h). As there is no toilet in the bus, take care not to drink too much on the way.

Agrigento is an interesting place to enjoy the historical sites (ancient Akragas, the Valley of Temples) and they were listed as World Heritage site. The Valley of Temple is huge and spectacular, consist of several temples such as Temple of Concordia, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Temple of Hercules, and Temple of Hera. Since kid, I love to watch Roman/Greek movie about super hero like Hercules and Xena, where Zeus and Hera also played in the movies. So I was so excited to visit the Valley of Temple.

We started our trip from Agrigento town and took bus to the Valley of Temple. It is about 1.6 km to the south of the town and the bus cost 1€. As we planned to see the Temple both in the day and night time, so the safe way was to buy the day ticket for bus which only cost 3.3€. The temple just right on the side of the main street, so as soon as we got down the bus, the ticket counter was in front of us. The entry ticket was 6€ (free admission for European Union citizen under 18 and over 65, 50% reduction for European Union citizen between 18-25 (www.valleyofthetemples.com).

Luckily, there was a bronze sculpture exhibition by Igor Mitoraj inside the area of Temple of Valley. So we enjoyed both the ancient and modern art in Agrigento. The weather in Agrigento on early October is quite hot, so advisable to use hat and sunglasses. There is a toilet  and souvenir shop inside the Temple area where you can buy water and ice cream.

After passing the main gate, a short walk will take you to the first temple which is Tempio Della Concordia (Temple of Concordia). The Temple was standing strongly (of course some renovation were done) and look spectacular. The four step lead to inside the temple, four pilars in front, 13 pilars on the side, the inner pillars/chamber look so magnificent.

Further walking, you can enjoy the olive trees in the middle of area. There are a lot of olive trees in the area of Valley of Temples. The olive tree in the first picture below is around 500 years old. You can also find almond tree and the fruits falling in the ground.

while there are some ruined sites in the right side

The next temple is Tempio Di Giunone (Temple of Juno, Temple of Hera). Similar as Temple of Concordia, Temple of Hera also is facing east,  big, has 4 step, and 6×1 3 pillars, however, only some of the pillars were stand.

From far we can see magnificent view of Valley of the Temples

Back to the main gate direction, lied Tempio Di Ercole (Temple of Hercules) just nearby the ticket counter. Even though the temple were almost ruined, it still look so strong and powerful, just like Hercules, the national hero of Sicily. Out of 38 column, only 9 still stand.

For the next temple, we must go out of this area, cross the street, and enter another part of the temple. Don’t worry, your first ticket is included for this part. Actually, there are so many ruined temple here , Temple of Olympean Zeus (Jupiter) and Temple of Asclepios (Esculapium). The only standing temple in this area is Tempio Di Castore E Polluce (Temple of Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux).

We spent almost one day in the Valley of Temples. Unfortunately the Valley of Temple were closed at night. So we just took few picture of the temple from far.

The town of Agrigento itself were quite normal for European town. But it is really worth to visit Agrigento. Highly recommended!
